Chapter 4- Leaf Anatomy Flashcards
1
Q
Epidermis
A
-outer layer of cells that provides protection and prevents water loss
2
Q
Palisade mesophyll cells
A
- located right below upper epidermis
- has many chloroplasts, where photosynthesis occurs
3
Q
Spongy mesophyll cells
A
- bottom of the leaf, where the leaf has a lot of space for gas movement
- has some chloroplasts, where moderate amount of photosynthesis occurs
4
Q
Stomata
A
-are pores on underside of leaf where gas enters and exits.
5
Q
Guard cells
A
-surround stomata and control their opening/closing.
6
Q
Chloroplasts
A
- organelle found in plants and photosynthetic algae NOT in cyanobacteria.
- Similar to mitochondria and contains: outer membrane, intermembrane space, inner membrane, stroma, Thylakoids, thylakoid lumen.
7
Q
Outer membrane
A
-Outer plasma membrane made of a phospholipid bilayer.
8
Q
Intermembrane space
A
-Space between the outer and inner membrane
9
Q
Inner membrane
A
-Inner plasma membrane made oh phospholipid bilayer
10
Q
Stroma
A
- fluid material that fills area inside inner membrane.
- Calvin cycle occurs here
11
Q
Thylakoids
A
- made of phospholipid bilayer within stroma
- where light dependent reactions occur
- a stack of thylakoids is called a granum
- a junction between two grana is called a lamella.
12
Q
Thylakoid lumen
A
- Interior of the thylakoid
- H+ ions accumulate making it acidic
