When water covers land that is normally dry, it is called a
flood
When there is no rain for a long time, it is called a
drought
How does a flood change the environment?
Floods wash away soil and plants which means animals lose their homes
How does a drought change the environment?
Droughts can lead to fires. Fires can hurt plants, destroy animals’ homes and the smoke pollutes the air
Besides flood and drought, what else can change environments?
Disease. It can hurt many living things and ruin an entire forest
How do living things respond to changes in the environment?
- Some move where they can find water
- Some hunt differently
- Some go to a deep sleep
- Some burrow underground to keep cool
What do frogs do to survive a drought?
They burrow into the mud to stay cool and go into a deep sleep so they don’t have to eat and awake when it is wet again
In a Prairie Ecosystem, what will happen to the eagles if the prairie dogs leave? Why?
The eagles will lose a food source and probably move to find another environment where they can eat.
In a Prairie Ecosystem, what will happen to the mice if the prairie dogs leave? Why?
The mice will lose their homes as prairie dogs digs the tunnels where mice live
Which animals need prairie dogs for food?
eagles and coyotes
When environments change, some living things cannot move away or change. What happens to them?
They become endangered
Why are Bengal Tigers endangered?
Because they are hunted for their fur
Why are Pandas endangered?
Because people cut down the forests where they live
