Chapter 4 Lab Vocab Flashcards
Exocrine Gland
A gland which secretes a substance onto a surface of the body , which may be an external surface (ex. sweat glands) or an internal surface (ex. mucus in small intestine)
Stratum Lucidum
The second most superficial layer of skin that is only found in thick skin such as the palms of hands or soles of feet. Usually appears as almost clear.
Hormone
Substances secreted by endocrine glands
Dermis
The layer of connective tissues deep to the epidermis
Sweat gland
Small tubular structures of the skin that produce sweat. There are two types, merocrine, and apocrine.
Stratified Squamous Epithelium
The type of epithelium that forms the surface of your skin. It also lines the inside of the oral cavity, esophagus, vagina, anal canal, and much of the pharynx. The tissue has cells with more than one shape. The deeper cells are typically cuboidal and superficial cells are squamous. It has a goal of protecting underlying tissues from abrasion.
Keratinocyte
The majority of epithelial cells in the epidermis which produce a protein called keratin.
Transitional Epithelium
makes up the inner lining of the urinary bladder, ureters, and part of the urethra. Stretches so the bladder can contain urine and expand. Cells change from a round, cuboidal shape, to a flattened shape when stretching.
Urothelium
Another name for transitional epithelium
Endocrine Gland
A ductless gland that secrets a substance directly into the blood stream, which then distributes it throughout the body.
Sebaceous Gland
Glands associated with hairs that secrete an oily substance called sebum
Epidermis
The stratified squamous epithelium of the skin
Keratin
A portion that provides some strength to the skin with a main function is to make the skin water-proof
Merocrine Sweat Gland
The smaller sweat gland which has a main function of cooling the body
Stratum Basale
The bottom layer of the epidermis which contains melanocytes and is usually cuboidal
Melanocyte
Cells found in the basal layer which produce a pigment called melanin
Stratum Corneum
The top layer of the epidermis which consists of dead keratinocytes which “water-proof” the skin
Stratified Cuboidal Epithelium
Forms the ducts of most exocrine glands, including sweat glands of the skin, mammary glands, and salivary glands. Typically two or just a few layers of cells.
Apocrine Sweat Gland
Larger sweat glands that are found in the pubic and axillary regions that produce an oily and odorous secretion.
Stratum Spinosum
The layer of epidermis between the basal and the granulosum.
Melanin
A pigment which makes skin dark and protects underlying cells from UV (ultraviolet) radiation
Sebum
Substance created by sebaceous glands which lubricates and conditions hair and skin and has antibacterial properties
Stratum Granulosum
The layer of epidermis above the spinousum which usually appears as a thin darkly stained layer in the middle of the epidermis
