the study of structures in the human body
Physiology
the study of how body parts function together
Anatomical Position
position where a person is standing upright with their arms at their sides; palms facing forwards
Prone Position
position where person is lying on their stomach
Supine Position
position where a person is lying on their back

Inferior
Below
Medial
Closer to a midline along the long axis of the body
Lateral
Further from the midline along the long axis of the body
Proximal
Closer to where the appendage meets with the torso
Distal
Further from where the appendage meets with the body
Ipsilateral
Structures on the same side of the body
Contralateral
Structures on opposite sides of the body
Superficial
Structure closer to the surface of the surface of the body
Deep
Structure further away from the surface of the body
Long Axis
Vertical down the middle of the body splitting the body into left and right
Longitudinal
Any cuts parallel to the long axis
Transverse
Any cut made perpendicularly to the long axis of the body
Cross-section
A 2-dimensional view an organ via a transverse cut
Frontal
a longitudinal cut that separates the ventral portion of the body or organ from the dorsal portion
Sagittal
a longitudinal cut that separates the left portion of a body organ from the right portion.
Coronal
aka. a frontal cut that separates the head into front and back
Midsagittal
when a sagittal cut is made along the exact midline of the body
Parasagittal
Any sagittal cut that is made either to the left or the right of the midline of the body
