Chapter 2 Lab Vocab Flashcards
Dorsal Body Cavity
The body cavity within the skull and spine
Ventral Body Cavity
The body cavity that contains the superior thoracic cavity and the inferior abdominopelvic cavity which are separated by the diaphragm
Cranial Cavity
The space inside the skull
Vertebral Cavity
The space inside the spine
Thoracic Cavity
The superior portion of the abdominopelvic cavity, divided into the mediastinum and pleural cavities.
Mediastinum
The center part of the thoracic cavity in between the pleural cavities which contains the pericardial cavity. It contains the trachea and esophagus.
Pleural Cavity
Cavities lateral to the pericardial cavity. Each one contains a lung.
Pericardial Cavity
The cavity within the mediastinum that surround the heart.
Abdominopelvic Cavity
The cavity under the diagphram that contains many organs and two cavities, the abdominal and pelvic cavity which has no physical structure dividing them.
Abdominal Cavity
The superior part of the abdominopelvic cavity which contains organs such as the stomach, liver, spleen, pancreas, and intestines.
Pelvic Cavity
The inferior cavity within the abdominopelvic cavity which contains organs such as the urinary bladder, rectum, uterus and ovaries.
Meninx
plural form meninges; membranes that surround dorsal body cavity organs
Serous Membrane
Two layered membranes that wrap organs in the ventral cavity
Visceral Serosa
part of serous membrane the wraps around organ
Parietal Serosa
part of serous membrane that lines body cavity
Serous Fluid
Fluid in between parietal and visceral membranes used for lubrication
Visceral Pericardium
Visceral membrane for pericardium that line the heart
Parietal Pericardium
Parietal membrane for pericardium that lines the pericardium
Visceral Pleura
Visceral membrane for pleural cavities that line the lungs
Parietal Pleura
Parietal membrane for pleura that line the pleural cavities
Visceral Peritoneum
Visceral membrane that lines organs within the abdominaopelvic cavity
Parietal Peritoneum
Parietal membrane that line the abdominopelvic cavity
Mesentery
Membranes that hold organs of the abdominopelvic cavity in place connecting them to each other and the inside of the body wall.
