Chapter 4- Jung Flashcards
What was Jung’s mother like?
She was two sided, with a warm/caring side and an unstable/mystical side
Jung’s background and family was filled with alot of what?
religion and mysticism, his grandpa and cousin thought they could talk to the dead
How did Jung view his personality as a child?
he viewed it as split (like his moms), having a “No. 1” and “No. 2” personality
Describe Jung’s reaction time test
100 words were read to a participant one at a time, and they had to say the first word that comes to mind. Words that produced hesitation stemmed from unconscious issues
What were the 3 levels of the Psyche according to Jung?
- The conscious mind (ego)
- The personal unconscious
- The collective unconscious
Describe the personal unconscious
Experiences from our personal life that don’t get into consciousness
Describe the collective unconscious
images are those that are beyond our personal experiences and that originate from the repeated experiences of our ancestors (everyone has the same collective unconscious)
What are the 8 most prominent archetypes?
- Persona
- Shadow
- Anima
- Animus
- The Great Mother
- The Wise Old Man
- The Hero
- The Self
Describe the archetype “persona”
it’s like our “public personality”, since the way we act in public isn’t who we really are
Describe the archetype “shadow”
the dark parts of our personality that we try to hide from both ourselves and others
Describe the archetypes “anima” and “animus”
The anima is the “woman within” responsible for the feminine side of men
The animus is the inner masculine side of women
Describe the archetypes “The Great Mother” and “The Wise Old Man”
The great mother is like our inner preexisting concept of a mother, means both fertility and destruction
The wise old man is kinda like the concept of authority, people who are dominated by this archetype are wise and might gain a following of people (basically like the Wizard from the wizard of oz or uncle iroh from ATLA)
Describe the archetype “The Hero”
archetype of a rly powerful person who fights to vanquish evil, can be symbolized by superheros, gods, etc. but they have to have a weakness (think of superman’s kryptonite)
Describe the archetype of “The Self”
the image we have of fulfillment, completion, or perfection, kind of like the “archetype of archetypes”
Describe the process of self-realization
it’s the ultimate psychological maturity; when the archetype of the self unites the opposing archetypes to make a whole
