What are the 3 levels of mental life?
Unconscious, preconscious, and conscious
How can the existence of the unconscious be proved? (according to Freud)
Indirectly through dreams, slips of the tongue, and repression
What did Freud call the portion of our unconscious that stems from our ancestors?
Phylogenetic endowment
All motivation can be traced to what two drives? What are the aims of these drives?
Sex- pleasure
Aggression- self-destruction
What are primary and secondary narcissism?
Primary-occurs during infancy when infants are really self-centered and their libido is invested on their own ego (universal)
Secondary- occurs during puberty when adolescents become pre-occupied with self-interests (not universal)
What are the three types of anxiety?
Neurotic anxiety, Moral anxiety, Realistic anxiety
What is neurotic anxiety and where does it stem from?
Anxiety/apprehension about an unknown danger, stems the id
What is moral anxiety and where does it stem from?
Anxiety akin to guilt, stems from the superego
What is realistic anxiety and where does it stem from?
Anxiety akin to fear, stems from the real world
What are the 8 defense mechanisms?
- Repression
- Reaction formation

What is reaction formation? Give an example
One of the ways repressed impulses may become conscious by adopting a disguise directly opposite of its original form
ex. a woman who hates her mom but shows an exaggerated, non-genuine love
What is introjection?
When people incorporate the positive qualities of another person into their own ego
What is sublimation? Give an example
when “bad” urges, drives, and behaviors are repressed and channeled into more socially acceptable behaviors
ex. instead of giving into the urge to cheat on your partner you go for a run
What are the 5 main stages of psychosexual development?
- Oral
- Anal
- Phallic
- Latency
- Genital
