Chapter 18- Rotter Flashcards
What is the core of Rotter’s theory?
People strive to reach their goals because they have a generalized expectancy that such strivings will be successful
A person who scores high on external control is likely to believe their life is controlled by what?
They believe their life is largely controlled by external forces outside themselves, such as chance, destiny, or the behavior of other people
A person who scored high on internal control is likely to believe their life is controlled by what?
They would believe their life is controlled within themselves and their actions
What two measurement scales did Rotter create?
The internal-external (I-E) control scale
The interpersonal trust scale
T/F- people who score high on external control are more likely to use contraceptives than someone who scores high on internal control
False, someone who scores high on internal control is more likely
An extreme score on either internal or external control may lead to what?
Being psychotic and out of touch with reality
How does Rotter describe interpersonal trust?
The expectancy held by an individual that the word of another person/group can be relied on
AKA how much you can trust people
Is it better to have a high or low interpersonal trust score?
High, its not only important but also essential for survival (ppl need to trust that the food they’re eating isn’t poisonous)
Compared to people who score low, those who score high on interpersonal trust are:
Less likely to lie and steal, more likely to be more trustworthy and give others a second chance
What does the interpersonal trust scale measure?
the extent to which a person expects the word or promise of another person to be true
