Chapter 4: Fishing, Forests And Farming Flashcards
Overfishing
This is when fish are taken from the water faster than they can reproduce
Reasons for overfishing
Modern technology
Mesh sizes
Seasons
Quotas
Modern technology
We use radar equipment to find fish. There is also an increase in the size of trawlers.
Mesh sizes
The net used to be to small and it meant that baby fish were getting caught. This reduced the opportunity of the fish being able to breed and replace
Seasons
Fish were caught every season, this meant that they werent give a chance to breed
Quotas
There was no limit to how much a trawler could catch
Types of farms
Dairy Arable (maize, wheat, barley) Horriculture Pastoral Livestock Mixed
Impact on the environment from farming
Insect sprays can be harmful and can end up in our food
Fertilisers can run of into streams and rivers. This pollutes our water supply.
The illigal dumping of silage, slurry and milk can also lead to rivers. This can kill fish.
Sustainable agriculture. Main aims for CAP
To provide income support
To ensure guaeanteed market prices
To support rural development
To provide Europe with a good supply of quality food
How to ensure sustainable agriculture
- Diversity crops, grow different crips
- Permanent grassland for plants and animals
- Protect water sources
Impact of deforestation on global climate
Trees release oxygen and absorb carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide is one of the greenhouse gases that cause climate change.
