Chapter 21: Globalisation Flashcards
What is globalisation
Globalisation is the way that people and places are interconnected with other people and places around the world.
Factors that influence globalisation
Transport Communication Politics Popular culture Economy (trade)
Transport
Goods and fresh produce are transported daily on container ships and cargo planes.
MNCs can fly their employees to their international offices
Communication
Employees in different parts of the world can talk on conference calls
Call centres can be located in a different country from the company’s customers.
Politics
The UN, European Union and the World Trade Organisation are all examples of international organisations that bring countries closer together.
Popular culture
The clothes we wear, the music we listen to and the TV shows we watch are all examples.
Economy (trade)
Trade agreements between countries means that goods can flow quickly and freely between countries.
Impact of globalisation
Multinational companies (MNCs) Food Environment Economic inequality Culture
Multinational companies (MNCs)
When skilled employees are required, MNCs will choose to locate in developed countries with an educated workforce.
When the work is labour-intensive, such as in the textile industry, MNCs are more likely to pick developing countries, where the cost of labour is much lower.
As a result, MNCs can widen the gap between developing countries and developed countries.
There is also little job security with MNCs
Food
We can now buy almost any type of food at any time of year. This is because foods can now be transported quickly from one country to another country.
The negative impact of growing one crop (monoculture):
In devolping countries the quality of the soil gets destroyed
Growing crops in the developing world takes the local space for locals to grow food for themselves.
The reliance of fertilisers is bad for the environement
Environment
People travel more often and larger distances
The goods we use have to be transported.
Energy is needed to power industries around the globe
Globalisation has also increased our awareness of climate change.
Economic Inequality
Developing countries are often exploited by the developed world. This widens the divide in the world between rich and poor.
Culture
The sharing of ideas, experiences and cultures is a positive result of globalisation.
Globalisation and population
The movement of people, knowledge and ideas have spread awareness about health and family planning.
