chapter 4 Flashcards
Tissues
Groups of cells that are similar in structure and function
Epithelium
the lining, covering, and glandular tissue of the body
Functions of epithelium
Protection, absorption, filtration, secretions
Characteristics of epithelial
Fit tightly together, have no blood supply, regenerate easily, one unattached surface
Epithelial simple
One layer, absorb, filter, secrete
Epithelial stratified
Multilayered for protection
Epithelial Squamous
Flat cells
Epithelial columnar
Vertical, rectangular shaped cells
Epithelial cuboidal
Square shaped cells
Transitional epithelial
Transition from one shape of cell to another
Endocrine glands
Ductless, secretions diffuse into bloodstream
Connective tissue
connects body parts
Exocrine gland’s
Have ducts that lead to surface to release secretions
Functions of connective tissue
Protecting, supporting, and binding together
Connective tissue characteristics
Good blood supply, extracellular matrix
Types of connective tissue
Blood, bone, hyaline cartilage, dense fibrous tissue, areolar tissue, adipose tissue you, reticular connective tissue
Blood
The only fluid tissue of the body
Nervous tissue
Irritability and conductivity. Receive and conduct electrical impulses from one part of the body to another
Muscle tissues
contract or shorten; movement
Skeletal muscle
Voluntary control, look stringy
Cardiac muscle
Found in the heart, involuntary control
Smooth muscle
Found in the walls of hollow organs. Stomach, bladder, uterus, blood vessels, esophagus
Peristalsis
A wavelike motion that keeps food moving through the esophagus and small intestines
