Chapter 37 : The Battle of Badr III - Opening Moves Flashcards
When did The Battle of Badr took place
- The Battle of Badr took place on the 17th Ramadhan 2 AH
- In the early morning, The Prophet gathered his companions and said :-
” Cast down your gaze [ Meaning do not be fixated of the number of your enemies ] and do not initiate the fighting and none of you should speak [ Meaning do not respond to the verbal abuse throw by the enemy and do not send any verbal abuse to the enemies ]. “
The Quraysh sends its scout to The Muslim Army
It is reported that after Fajr, Quraysh sent its most experienced scout Umayr Ibn Wahab Al Jamhi to get an estimation of the size of The Muslim Army
- He reports back that here are about 300 men
- He also warns Quraysh that the young men of Yathrib are waiting to inflict death upon you for they have nothing but their swords [ No Armour, Spears, Javelin, etc ]
- He also tells them that he does not think that The Quraysh would be able to kill any one amongst them until they kill at least one of you
The Prophet sends A Messenger to The Quraysh Army
- The Prophet sends A Messenger to prevent them from fighting
- Utbah Ibn Rabiah then addresses his own Quraysh Army saying :-
” O Quraysh ! Listen to me today and disobey me for the rest of your lives. Go back to Makkah and drink your wine and embrace your women for Muhammad is A relative and A nephew of yours. “
Abu Jahl inciting war
- One of the men of Quraysh who tried to avoid A war was Hakim Ibn Hizam whose son was A Muslim
- Hakim goes to Utbah Ibn Rabiah who didnt want war from day one and he encourages him to mediate A truce and asks :-
” Why don’t you take on the blood money of Al Hadrami ? “
- Amr Al Hadrami was the person who died when the 6 companions of The Prophet attacked The Caravan in The Sacred Month of Rajab [ Raid on Nakhla ]
- Some of The Quraysh were inciting their men to fight by shouting :-
” These are the people who killed Al Hadrami ! We need to take revenge for him … ! “
- Utbah Ibn Rabiah agrees to pay the blood money to the families to prevent further bloodshed
- When Abu Jahl sees that his men are wavering, he approaches the brother of Amr Al Hadrami and shames him for accepting gold and not avenging his brother
- Abu Jahl also called Utbah A coward saying :-
” O Utbah, you saw the swords of the sons of Abdul Muttalib and became A coward … “
- Utbah came down from his camel and beat up Abu Jahl and said :-
” Someone like me is A coward !? Today Quraysh will know who is more vicious and who is more cowardly ! “
Moral of The Story
- Do not lose your Akhira [ Afterlife ] just because of the comment’s of some people
- Who knows, had Utbah been patient and ignored the comment’s of Abu Jahl and not go for war, maybe Allah would have given him Hidayah [ Guidance ] and Taufeeq [ Allah’s Blessing’s ]
- But he lost his cool because of A single comment from insignificant people and lost this opportunity
The Prophet on who not to kill specifically
1) Al Abbas Ibn Abdul Muttalib [ The Prophet’s Uncle ]
2) Abul Bakhtari Ibn Hisham [ He was instrumental in suspending The Boycott against The Banu Hashim in Makkah ]
Moral of The Story
- Not all people who stand’s against Islam are on the same level [ As Abu Jahl, Muawiyah, Yazid, etc ]
- Some people maybe were coerced, brainwashed, social pressures or had no choice
- Thus, we need to analyze and treat everyone fairly [ Not necessarily equally ]
The First Casualty
- The first person to die in The Battle of Badr was from The Clan of Abu Jahl whose name was Al Aswas Ibn Abdul Aswas Al Makhzumi
- When The Quraysh came to the battlefield and saw all the water had been cut off, Al Aswad said :-
” I will be the one to get some water for you or I will die trying. “
- And so he attempted to sneak into the side where there were the wells but Hamza saw him and cut off his leg and then killed him before he reached the water
- This likely took place on The Eve of Battle of in The Early Morning Hours
The Battle Begins
- The following 3 from The Quraysh’s Army stepped forward to engage in Duel Fighting known as Mubarazah [ Individuals engage in Direct Combat with one another ] :-
1) Utbah Ibn Rabiah [ Father of Hind who was wife of Abu Sufyan ]
2) Shaybah Ibn Rabiah [ Brother of Utbah ]
3) Al Waleed Ibn Utbah [ Son of Utbah ]
- Utbah shouted :-
” O Muhammad ! Send us our equals from Quraysh ! “
- 3 Young Men from The Ansar came forward :-
1) Awf Ibn Al Harith [ Also known as Awf Ibn Afra ]
2) Muawwidh Ibn Al Harith
3) Abdullah Ibn Rawahah
- Utbah says [ Because of the distance maybe he can’t see their faces ] :-
” Who are you ! Tell us your lineage so we may know who you are. “
- They reply :-
” We are Banu Afraa, The Helpers of God and The Helpers of His Messenger. “
- Utbah responds :-
” Go back ! We do not want you. We only wish [ To Fight ] our equals from The Quraysh. “
1) Ubaydah Ibn Al Harith Ibn Al Muttalib Ibn Abdul Manaf ibn Qusay
- The Prophet looked towards Ubaydah Ibn Al Harith Ibn Al Muttalib Ibn Abdul Manaf who was 70 years old and said :-
” Stand O Ubaydah ! And he stood up with his sword. “
- Abdul Manaf Ibn Qusay had multiple children and 2 of which were :-
1) Hashim Ibn Abdul Manaf [ Father of Abdul Muttalib who was the Father of Abdullah who was the father of Muhammad ]
2) Muttalib Ibn Abdul Manaf [ Father of Al Harith who was the father of Ubaydah ]
- Thus, Ubaydah was from Banu Quraysh and a cousin of The Prophet but he was not from Banu Hashim
2) Hamza Ibn Abdul Muttalib Ibn Hashim Ibn Abdul Manaf Ibn Qusay
- The Prophet then looked towards Hamza Ibn Abdul Muttalib and said :-
” O Uncle ! “
3) Ali Ibn Abu Talib Ibn Abdul Muttalib Ibn Hashim Ibn Qusay
- The Prophet then turned to Ali and said :-
” Stand O Ali “
- And Ali was the youngest of them [ Around 23 years old at the time ]
- The Prophet then said :-
” O Ubaydah, you fight Utbah, Hamza, you fight Shaybah and Ali you fight Al Waleed. “
- The way the Duel [ Mubarazah ] works is that each person would fight someone of a similar age. Thus Ubaydah who was the oldest [ Around 70s ] fought with Utbah who was also the oldest. Hamza who was middle aged fought Shaybah who was also middle aged and Ali who was the youngest fought Al Waleed who was also the youngest
- Utbah then shouted :-
” Who are you ? Tell us your lineage so we may know you. “
- Ubaydah then said :-
” I am Ubaydah Ib Al Harith Ibn Al Muttalib “
- Utbah replied :-
” Noble equals. Who are these two. “
- Ubaydah said :-
” They are Hamza Ibn Abdul Muttalib and Ali Ibn Abu Talib. “
- Utbah replied :-
” Two noble equals as well. May God curse the one who made us stand against each other [ Again hinting that Utbah does not want to fight ]. “
Hamza confronts Shaybah
- Hamza then stood infront of Shaybah
- Shaybah said [ Shaybah was probably trying to get into Hamza’s head ] :-
” Who are you ? “
- Hamza replied :-
” I am Hamza Ibn Abdul Muttalib, The Lion of God and The Lion of His Messenger. “
- Shaybah said :-
” You have now encountered The Lion of The Jungle. Let us see how you fight O Lion of God. “
The Individual Duels [ Mubarazah ]
- Ubaydah, Hamza and Ali all kill their opponents but Ubaydah is fatally wounded
- Hamza and Ali carry Ubaydah off the battlefield and take him to The Prophet
- The Prophet’s eyes fills with tears
- Ubaydah then asked The Prophet :-
” O Messenger of God, Am I going to be A martyr. “
- The Prophet replied says :-
” Yes, You are the first martyr from my family. “
Iblees manifests as Suraqa Ibn Malik
- Narrations state that Iblees manifested as Suraqa Ibn Malik and took The Quraysh’s Flag and became the Standard Bearer and tried to rally them
- The Prophet tells his men to maintain discipline not to unsheathe their swords until he gives the command
- The Prophet prays :-
” Lord ! If this band of men is destroyed, you will no longer be worshipped. But if you wish not to be worshipped then you will not be worshipped. “
Gabriel arrives to aid The Muslim Army
- The Prophet feels faint for an instant and then tells his men that Gabriel has arrived with 1,000 Angels to aid them
- The Quran mentions this :-
” [ Remember ] when you sought aid [ tastaghithun ] from your Lord and He answered you ‘’ I will assist you [ mumiddukum ] with a thousand Angels following [ murdafin ]. “
Al Quran [ 8 : 9 ]
- Allah then speaks to The Angels :-
” [ Remember ] when your Lord revealed to the Angels ‘ I am with you so make the believers firm. I shall cast terror into the hearts of the faithless. Then strike above their necks and their every fingertip. ‘ “
- As The Battle was about to begin, The Prophet stooped down, picked up some pebbles, threw it towards The Direction of The Quraysh and said :-
” May these faces be cursed. “
- And every single person in The Army of The Quraysh felt blinded by this even though The Prophet was far away [ This was A Miracle mentioned in The Quran ] :-
” So you did not slay them, it was Allah who slew them. You did not throw, it was Allah who threw so that He could try the faithful, A beautiful trial from Himself. Allah is All Hearing, All Knowing. “

- After this, The 2 Armies clashed and The Battle Begins
