Chapter 36.2- Bone Anatomy Flashcards
Cartilage
Flexible, fibrous protein (collagen), no blood vessels, heals slowly
Periosteum
membrane of bone, contains blood vessels and nerves
Diaphysis
Bone shaft
Epiphysis
Head of bone
Compact bone
70% inorganic salts (calcium phosphate), 30% collagen
mostly in diaphysis, thin layer at epiphysis
Spongy bone
compact bone, numerous hollows, holds red bone marrow, mostly in epiphysis
Red bone marrow
Produces red blood cells
Spongy bone function
makes blood cells, gives strength and rigidity
Yellow bone marrow
Fat rich, inactive, more common in adults, can be converted to red if needed
Growth plate
Cartilage, area between epiphysis and diaphysis where bone growth occurs
Osteoblast
bone forming cell
How bone is formed
Osteoblast produces collagen, hard compound (mainly calcium phosphate) forms around collagen, renders osteoblast a dormant bone cell called an osteoclast (ossified)
Ossify
to turn cartilage into bone
Osteoclast
Digest bone in medullary cavity, deposit calcium into blood cells
Osteocyte
Osteoblast surrounded in matrix
