Chapter 25- Blood Flashcards
Blood
Plasma, red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets
Plasma
Liquid part of blood (55%) made of 90% water, 7% proteins and 3% dissolved materials
Serum
Plasma without clotting proteins
Antibodies
Proteins found in plasma produced by lymphocytes to combine with and neutralise substances
Clotting proteins
Proteins found in blood which help to form blood clots
Erythrocytes
Red blood cells
Red Blood Cells
Erythrocytes, carry oxygen as red oxyhaemoblogin, biconcave shape, made in bone marrow, broken down in liver to form bile
Haemoglobin
Purple protein that turns to bright red oxyhemoglobin
White Blood Cells
Leucocytes, fight infection, larger and fewer than RBCs,, 2 types: lymphocytes and phagocytes
Leucocytes
White Blood Cells
Platelets
Thrombocytes, formed from cell fragments in bone marrow, clot blood
Thrombocytes
Platelets
Phagocytosis
When a cell engulfs another and digests it
Lymphocytes
25% of WBCs, made in bone marrow, found in lymphatic system, form antibodies
Monocytes
5% of WBCs, made in bone marrow, engulf bacteria, kidney shaped nuclei, live for 6-9 days
