Chapter 36.1- Muscloskeletal System Flashcards
Antagonistic muscle pairs
pairs of muscles that work opposite to each other
Osteoporosis
Loss of protein (collagen) material from bone. Causes bone to become brittle and easily broken
Synovial Fluid
Lubricates joint and is a shock absorber
Ligament
Bone to Bone
Tendon
Muscle to bone
Cartilage
Composed of protein fibres + is flexible. Limits friction and is a shock absorber
Axial Skeleton
Central section of skeleton ie. skull, backbone, ribs, sternum
Appendicular Skeleton
Limbs ie. Pectoral girdle, pelvic girdle, limbs
Outgrowth
Attachment point on vertebrae for ligaments and tendons for movement of the spine
Neural Canal
Gap in vertebrae allow spinal cord through + protect it
Centrom
Thick solid part of a vertebra that holds the weight
Scapulas
Shoulder blade
Clavicle
Collarbone
Pectoral Girdle
Scapula and clavicle attached to back by muscles, for movement of the arm
Phalages
Toe and finger bones
Carpals
8 fused bones make up wrist
Free moving (synovial) joints
Joints that can move freely eg. knee
Metacarpals
bones that connect fingers to carpal, palm
Sacrum
5 fused bones at base of spine (between coccyx and lumbar)
Coccyx
Tailbone, 4 fused bones
Lumbar
lower back, 5 vertebrae
Thoraic
Upper back, 12 vertebrae
