preeclampsia
A condition that occurs in the second half of pregnancy (after 20 weeks’ gestation) that presents as new-onset hypertension along with other systemic effects
signs of preeclampsia
Hypertension (systolic blood pressure >140 mm Hg, diastolic blood pressure > 90 mm Hg)
Severe or persistent headache
Visual abnormalities such as seeing spots, blurred vision, or sensitivity to light
Swelling in the hands and feet (edema)
Upper abdominal or epigastric pain
Dyspnea and/or retrosternal chest pain
Anxiety
Altered mental status
eclampsia
seizures
treatment for eclampsia
Lay the patient on her left side.
Prevents supine hypotensive syndrome
Maintain her airway.
Administer supplemental oxygen.
If vomiting occurs, suction the airway.
Provide rapid transport for a pregnant patient having seizures and call for an ALS intercept, if available.
signs of an ectopic pregnancy
may present the same as internal bleeding
Consider the possibility of an ectopic pregnancy in a woman who has missed a menstrual cycle and reports sudden, severe, usually unilateral pain in the lower abdomen.
abruptio placentae
the placenta separates prematurely from the wall of the uterus
pt may present w signs of shock
placenta previa
the placenta develops over and covers the cervix
if the amniotic sac is not ruptured before delivery…
puncture it with a clamp away from fetuses face
how to cut umbilical cord
cut 6 inches away from infant
place clamps 2-4 apart
cut cord
when should you begin resuscitation efforts on an infant?
if the newborn does not breath after 10-15 seconds of stimulation
if a limb presents during birth

spina bifida
A developmental defect in which a portion of the spinal cord or meninges may protrude outside of the vertebrae and possibly outside of the body
spina bifida treatment
Cover the open area of the spinal cord with a moist, sterile dressing and then an occlusive dressing to seal the area immediately after birth.
