Chapter 3: Stress Flashcards
Does stress make you social?
Yes!!!!
Stressed people who believed stress was bad had what % increase of dying?
43%
What happened to people that believed the stress response was helpful for their performance?
They were less anxious, stressed and more confident
What is the “cuddle hormone”
Oxytocin
What does oxytocin do to the heart?
Helps heart cells regenerate and heal from stress
The stress response has a build in what?
A stress resilience system
What percent of time are our minds lost in thought?
47%
What is meditation?
Not about stopping thoughts
It is about stepping back, and seeing it clearly without judgement with relaxed focused mind
What is the potential of mindfulness?
Changes how we experience life
What is Stress?
Survival Mechanism (fight or flight), not supposed to be long term
Physical and emotional state that accompanies the stress response
What is the primary determinant of health consequences with stress?
How the Individual responds to stress
What two systems are involved in the physical changes?
Nervous System
Endocrine System
What are the different parts of the Nervous System
Somatic
Autonomic
Parasympathetic
Sympathetic
Somatic nervous system
Voluntary movement
Autonomic nervous system
Not under conscious consciousness (digestion)
2 divisions
Parasympathetic
Sympathetic
What is the parasympathetic nervous system
In control when u are relaxed
Aids in digestion, storing energy, & growth promotion
What is sympathetic nervous system
Activated when your in emergency situations (pain, anger and fear)
Releases norepinephrine which commands body to use stored energy to respond to crisis (increases attention and alertness)
What is the Endocrine system?
Works alongside nervous system to respond to a stressor
system of glands, tissues and cells that control body functions by releasing hormones and chemical messages into blood stream
What is the path of the nervous and endocrine system?
- Brain detects threat
- Neurochem message is sent to the hypothalamus
- Hypothalamus releases corticotropin-releasing factor to the pituitary gland
- Which releases adrenocortotropic hormone (ACTH) into bloodstream
- ATCH reaches adrenal glands which release cortisol and other key hormones into blood stream
When the adrenal gland releases cortisol what happens in the body?
Increased glucose utilization, fat mobilization, and muscle breakdown
What happens simultaneously to the nervous system and brain?
The sympathetic nervous system instructs the adrenal gland to release epinephrine (adrenaline) which triggers bodily changes
What bodily changes occur with the release of epinephrine?
Increased sweating
Decreased salivation
Increased muscular tension and cardiac function
Increased metabolic rate
Decreased digestion rate
Hearing and vision become more acute
Liver releases extra sugar to boost energy
Brain releases endorphins
What is fight or flight in modern life?
Not always an intense physical reaction
Survival mechanism
Body always prepares for physical action regardless of whether its an appropriate reponse
What is the tend and befriend response?
A way to respond to stress with social and nurturing behaviours
An emotional and behavioural response
