Q

Identify and discuss the basic structure and function of the three major components of a cell

A

Plasma membrane-membrane that encloses the cytoplasm and forms outer boundary of the cell

Cytoplasm-the internal living material of cells that fills the space between the plasma membrane and the nucleus

Nucleus-small sphere in the central portion of the cell contains most of genetic information

Q

Compare the major passive and active transport processes that act to move substances through cell membranes.

A

Passive
Diffusion-movement of particles through a membrane from an area of high concentration to low concentration

Osmosis-diffusion of water through a selectively permeable membrane in the presence of at least one impermeable solute

Filtration-movement of water and small solute particles through a filtration membrane
Active
Ion pump- movement of solute particles from an area of low concentration to an area of high concentration
Phagocytosis- movement of cells or other large particles into cell by trapping it in a section of plasma membrane that pinches off the inside the cell
Pinocytosis- movement of fluid and dissolved molecules into a cell by trapping them in a section of plasma membrane that pinches off inside the cell

Q

Compare and discuss DNA and RNA and their functions in protein synthesis

A

DNA dictates directions for protein synthesis, that is contained in the cell of the nucleus. RNA copies the genetic information from the nucleus and carries it to the cytoplasm.
