Chapter 3: Autonomic Nervous System Flashcards
What does the Autonomic System do?
Control the involuntary actions of the body like breathing and heartbeat.
What does the Autonomic System controls?
Homeostasis by regulating the organ systems of the body like sweat glands.
What does Sweat Glands do?
Helps cool down the body when it gets cold.
What are the 2 types of cells that make up the Nervous System?
Neurons and Glial cells.
What are neurons?
The building blocks of the nervous system.
What does neurons do?
Information travels along as electrical signals nerve impulses.
Does all neurons have the same basic parts?
Yes.
The Control Center of the cell is known as?
The cell body.
What does the cell body contains?
The nucleus.
What does the nucleus houses?
The genetic blueprint that directs the cell’s activities.
What is the axon?
Nerve fiber.
What does the axon do?
Transmits electrical signals from the cell body to other neurons.
What are Dendrites?
Branching fibers that receive electrical signals from other neurons.
How does electrical impulses enter the neuron?
Via the dendrites and leave via the axon.
These signals are passed to the next neuron at special sites known as?
Synapses.
