when an employment practice that does not appear to be discriminatory adversely affects individuals with a particular characteristic so that they are substantially underpprestend. ex making women carry and 150lb bag down a ladder if they try to be a fire fighter bc they will fail but its part of the jb
status blind
employment decisions that are made without regard to individuals personal characteristics

practice necessary for safe and efficient organizational operations
BFOQ bona fide occupational qualification
characteristic providing a legitimate reason an employer can exclude persons on otherwise illegal bses of consideration
title VII of civil rights acts of 1964 says..?

civil rights act of 1991
requires that employers show that an enployment practice is job related for the position and consistent with businesss necessity
pregnancy discrimination act of 1978
says employers must trate materinity leave the same as other personal or medical leaves
equal pay act of 1963
requires employers to pay similar wages for similar work without regard to gender
pay equity
idea that pay for jobs requiring comparbale levels of nowledge, skill, and ability should be similar, even if actual duties differe significantly
glass ceiling
discriminatory practices that have prevented women and minority status employees from advancing to executive level jobs
sexual harrassment
unwelcome verbal, visual, or physicial conduct of a sexual nature that is severe and affects working conditions or creates a hostile working environment
