chapter 3 Flashcards
antibodies can recognize antigens but they can also recognize
lipids, nucleic acids, and other types of molecules
effector T cell activation:
activation of macrophages (cell-mediated immunity)
and
B cell activation and antibody production (humoral immunity)
these are expressed on antigen-presenting cells and function to display peptides derived from protein antigens
MHC molecules
these cells can only respond to antigen presented by MHC class I molecules
CD8 t cells
these cells can only respond to antigen presented by MHC class II molecules
CD4 t cells
class I MHC polymorphic regions:
a1 and a2
peptide-binding cleft for peptides is 8-9 aa long
class I mhc
__ binds CD8 t cell co receptors for mhc class I
a3
polymorphic regions for class II MHC
a1 and b1
peptide-binding cleft for peptides 1-30 aa long
10-30
these bind CD4 t cell co-receptor for mhc class II
a2 and b2
___ and ___ genes are the most polymorphic genes in the genome
class I and class II mhc
the total number of HLA alleles in the human population is estimated to be about ______ class I alleles and ____ class II alleles
10,000 class I
3,000 class II
____expression of alleles inherited from parents
codominant
MHC-expressing cell types for class II:
for class I:
class II:
macrophages, dentritic cells, B cells
class II:
all nucleated cells
