Applying the Cervical Collar
A
- Soft cervical collars do not provide sufficient support for trauma patient’s
- Many types of rigid cervical collars are available
- cervical collar should be applied to a patient that has potential spinal trauma

Spinal Immobilization in MA
A
- Ensure cervical spine stabilization
- Long backboards are NOT considered standard of care in most cases of potential spinal injury
- Instead, use spinal motion restriction with a cervical collar and cot in most cases
- exceptions, such as a patient with potential spinal injury who cannot be logrolled while being transported may be at risk of a compromised airway
- EMS will determine how the patient will be immobilized for transport per their
