Chapter 3 Flashcards
Communities
A group of interacting populations at the same place and time, only biotic
Limiting factors
Any abiotic or biotic factors that limits the numbers, reproduction, or distribution of organisms
Abiotic limiting factors examples
Sunlight, climate, temperature, water, nutrients, fire, soil chemistry, space
Biotic limiting factors examples
Living things
Range of tolerance
What an organism can deal with in order to survive
Zone of stress
The area between the range of tolerance and range of intolerance
Range of intolerance
Where an organism can’t live due to the biotic and abiotic factors
Optimum zone
Place where a particular species likes to be
Ecological succession
How an ecosystem is going to change over time
Primary succession
The establishment of a community in an area of exposed rock that does not have any topsoil
Primary succession examples
Lava, rockslide, desert, tundra
Lichens and mosses
Help create acids that help to break down rocks. Water, wind
Climax community
Mature community that results when there is little change in the composition of species
Secondary succession
Soil has been made, something wipes out what’s living on it
Ex of secondary succession
Fire, flood, windstorm, mudslide, tilling
Pioneer stages
Bare rock, lichens, small plants (primary)
