Chapter 28: The Reproductive System Flashcards
FUNCTIONS OF MALE REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM
- The testes produce sperm and the male sex
hormone testosterone.. - The ducts transport, store, and assist in maturation
of sperm. - The accessory sex glands secrete most of the liquid
portion of semen. - The penis contains the urethra, a passageway for
ejaculation of semen and excretion of urine.
The supporting structure for the testes
SCROTUM
Scrotum: Externally: separated by
median range, raphe
Scrotum: Internally: separated by,
scrotal septum.
– contraction of
cremaster muscle; ipsilateral contraction.
Cremaster Reflex
– testis towards the body (cold)
(move upward)
Contract –
move away from the body (hot)
Relax
testicles
are paired oval glands in the scrotum
TESTES
how sperms are made.
SPERMATOGENESIS
(stem cells)
Spermatogonium
– diploid (2n)
Primary Spermatocyte
formed by
meiosis I. No replication of DNA.
Secondary Spermatocyte
four haploid from meiosis II
Spermatids
acrosome and tail
appears, become sperm
Spermiogenesis
1 spermatocyte = __ spermatids
4
The male reproductive cell, or gamete
SPERM -
ducts store and transport
most of the sperm cell.
Ducts of the Testis
provide fructose
for ATP production by sperm, contribute to sperm
motility and viability, help semen coagulate after
ejaculation.
SEMINAL VESICLES –
– secrete milky fluid that
contains enzymes, breaks down clotting proteins
PROSTATE
secrete alkaline
substance that lubricates the lining of urethra and
tip of the penis during sexual intercourse.
BULBOURETHRAL GLANDS
(COWPER’S GLAND) –
– (seed) mixture of sperm and seminal
fluid
SEMEN
- transport medium, protects
semen from acidic environment in the male urethra
and female vagina.
SEMINAL FLUID
Contains urethra
Passageway of semen and urine
Cylindrical in shape
PENIS
– fibrous tissue
. Tunica Albuginea
– “main bodies” “hollow”
Corpora cavernosa Penis –
contains spongy
urethra and keeps it open during ejaculation.
Corpus Spongiosum Penis –
slightly enlarged, acornshaped
region.
Distal
Glans Penis
Distal urethra forms a slit like opening called
External Urethral Orifice.
foreskin present in uncircumcised
penis.
Prepuce
considered as part of the
female reproductive system
MAMMARY GLANDS c
female gonads; egg
receptacle
Almond in shape
Produce gametes/oocytes that develops into
eggs upon fertilization.
Homologous to testis; same embryonic origin.
OVARIES (OVARY)
secondary oocytes that develop into
mature ova or eggs
Gametes
progesterone, estrogens (female
sex hormone), inhibin and relaxin.
Hormones
Route for sperm to reach ovum
Transport secondary oocytes and fertilized ova
from ovaries to uterus.
.UTERINE TUBE (FALLOPIAN TUBES/OVIDUCTS)
funnel-shaped portion, close to the
ovary and open to the pelvic cavity
Infundibulum
– widest, longest portion
Ampulla
joins the Uterus
Isthmus
Site of implantation of fertilized ovum,
development of fetus during pregnancy
Source of menstrual flow
Larger when female has been pregnant
Uterus
production of egg in the ovary
➢ 1 primary oocytes in every follicle
OOGENESIS
eggs formed from the 2
cells in the reproductive system
➢ Begins development in 3rd month
➢ OOGONIUM
dome shape portion; the
height can estimate the age of pregnancy.
FUNDUS OF UTERUS
smooth muscle
Body of Uterus
opens to the vagina and where
the fetus passes.
Cervix of Uterus –
– interior of cervix
Cervical Canal
cervical opening in to the uterine.
Internal Os –
cervical canal that opens
External Os
long muscular canal lined with
membrane that extends from exterior of the body
to the uterine cervix
- Outlet for menstrual flow and passage for
child birth.
Vagina
– external genitals of the
female.
. VULVA “PUDENDUM” –
elevation of adipose tissue
covered by skin and coarse pubic hair, cushion
the pubic symphysis
MOND PUBIS –
(labium majus) covered by
pubic hair, contain adipose tissue, sebaceous
glands, apocrine sudoriferous
LABIA MAJORA
– devoid of pubic hair, produce
antimicrobial substance and lubrication
LABIA MINORA
– corpora cavernosa , contains
numerous blood vessels. Anterior of Labia
Minora
CLITORIS
– labia minora
unites and covers clitoris
Prepuce of the clitoris
exposed portion of the
clitoris
Glans Clitoris
– contains the hymen
Catheter is inserted on top of the vagina
VESTIBULE –
opening of vagina
exteriorly, where the baby comes out
VAGINAL ORIFICE
Diamond shaped
Contains external genitals and anus
. PERINEUM OF A FEMALE
provides lubrication
Greater Vestibular (Bartholin’s Gland)
contains the anus
Anal triangle
weakens due to multiple
child birth, resulting to uncontrolled urinations
through coughing
Pelvic Floor Muscle
have closely spaced opening ducts
called lactiferous ducts where milk emerges.
Nipple –
circular pigment area containing the
nipple, contains modified sebaceous glands.
Areola
becomes looser with age or with
excessive strain
Suspensory Ligaments of the Breast (Coopers
Ligaments) –
