- beneath epidermis
- connective tissue
- mechanical support to epidermis and contains blood vessels, nerves, sweat glands, hair follicles and sebaceous glands

- barrier against microorganisms, foreign particles from dirt and debris, chemicals and ultraviolet rays
- helps the body maintain water and electrolytes
