Chapter 25- Endocrine Regulation Flashcards
What are hormones?
Signalling molecules released by glands into bloodstream to target specific cells causing change
Regulate the activity of other cells
What are three distinct traits of the endocrine system?
Slow
Longer lasting response
Uses Hormones
What are specific functions of hormones?
Reproduction Growth and development Mobilization of body defences Maintenance of homeostasis Regulation of metabolism
What are the two kinds of hormones and what defines them?
Steroid hepor ones- made from cholesterol. Lipid soluble (can pass through bilayers)
No steroid hormones- 2 kinds
-made from amino acids
Glycoproteins hormones and peptide hormones
What is the lock and key mechanism of hormone action?
Target cell has receptor that will only accept hormones of certain shape
What are 4 possible effects of hormones?
Change plasma membrane permeability
Activate synthesis or proteins
Activate or deactivate function of enzymes
Stimulate mitosis
What are the 3 ways glands are stimulated to release hormones?
Hormonal control- Other hormones (tropic hormones) control release (ie pituitary releasing TSH to make thyroid release T3)
Change in blood levels or certain substances (like glucose or calcium)
Neural control- controlled by sympathetic nervous system
What is the function of the endocrine system?
Communication
Integration
Control
-to maintain homeostasis through feedback loops
