Essay: Explain why President Nixon resigned.
The Supreme Court ruled that Nixon must release all the taped conversations from his office. The previously unreleased tapes showed that although the president had known about the watergate break in beforehand, he had participated in attempts to cover up the involvement of his White House subordinates. With impeachment by the House and conviction by the Senate a virtual certainty in the Democrat controlled Congress, Nixon chose to resign.
