To deal with the lack of trees, homesteaders built their homes and other farm buildings out of the prairie sod and used first hedges and later barbed wire for fencing. To deal with the lack of rain, farmers irrigated their fields from the regions rivers or pumped water from the water table below the ground, using windmills to drive the pumps. They also used the widespread practice of “dry farming”, the cultivation of crops by careful conservation of water

The victory by the Sioux caused many of the Indians to think that the fighting was over, so they left the Sioux fighting force. The American forces defeat on the hand spurred the American government to send more men and supplies to defeat the Indians
