What type of cells get cancer in ovarian CA? Which is the most common?
Epithelial cells - cover the ovary — the most common
Germ cells - inside the ovary
Stromal cells - produce female hormones
What are the symptoms of advanced ovarian CA?
stomach/pelvic pain or pressure, early satiety, involuntary wt loss and abd swelling — 70% of cases (early symptoms often ignored)
What is the 5-year survival rate for ovarian CA?
94% - stage IA
66% - stage II
34% - stage III
18% - stage IV
What are the risk factors for ovarian CA?
Age - risk increases with age
HT and BMI - higher height and BMI > 30 increases risk
Reproductive Hx - giving birth, oral contraceptives for > 5 yrs, breastfeeding, and tubal ligation REDUCE risk
Family Hx - 5-15% are genetic
Genetic mutations - BRCA1, BRCA 2, RAD51C
How many (%) of advanced cases of ovarian CA need intestinal surgery as well?
30-50%
How many (%) of patients that receive pelvic radiation develop GI symptoms?
70% - usually diarrhea
What % of ovarian CA patients experience Malignant Bowel Obstruction (MBO)?
