Chapter 22: Drugs For Muscle Spasm And Spasticity Flashcards
Muscle relaxants
Decrease mm tone
Used to treat: muscle spasms, pain, hyperreflexia
2 Types:
1. spasmolytics -work centrally, level of spinal cord or brain
2. NM blockers -work peripherally, block N1 receptors in NMJ to stop skel contractions. Used during surgery and procedures such as intubation to cause short term flaccid paralysis
Spasmolytics
Indication: tx of painful musculoskeletal conditions ex. Mm spasms asso with overexertion, spasticity asso with MS and CP. These drugs work best with PT.
Diazepam
o MOA: Binds to GABA an increase it to increase CL
o Use: Muscle spasms
Tizanidine (zanaflex)
o MOA: Alpha 2 agonists (decreases excitatory NTM)
o Treats spasms associate with MS
Baclofn (lioresol)
o MOA: Activation of GABA to increase K
o Use: Spasm from spinal cord injury
Dantrolene
o MOA: Ryanodine Receptor Antagonist (prevents release of CA and then muscle contraction) in skel mm, blocks ryr1
o Use: Treats muscle spasms associated with MS, CP , SCI, MH
Drug used for local muscle spasm asso with overexertion or injuries
- carisoprodol
- cyclodenzapine
- metaxalone
- chlorozoxazone
- orphenadrine
MOA: Act in brainstem
