Chapter 21 - Electrochemistry Flashcards
electrochemical process
any conversion between chemical energy and electrical energy
electrochemical cell
any device that converts chemical energy into electrical energy or vice-a-versa
voltaic cell
(Alessandro Volta) are electrochemical cells used to convert chemical energy into electrical energy
half - cell
one part of a voltaic cell in which either oxidation or reduction occurs
salt bridge
half cells are connected by this… and it is mainly a tube that has a strong electrolyte
electrode
is a conductor in a circuit that carries electrons to or from a substance(other than metal)
anode
the electrode where oxidation occurs (negatively charged)
cathode
the electrode where reduction occurs (positively charged)
dry cell
is a voltaic cell in which the electrode is a paste
battery
a group of cells connected together
fuel cells
are voltaic cells in which fuel substance undergoes oxidation and from which electrical energy is continually obtained
electrical potential
is a measure of a voltaic cells ability to produce an electric current
reduction potential
the tendency of a half reaction to occur as as a reduction
cell potential
the difference between the reduction potentials between the two half cells
standard cell potential
(E0cell) is the measured cell potential when the ion concentration in the half cells are 1M
