Chapter 20 Lymphatic System Flashcards
Interstitial fluid
-Excess interstitial fluid which has escaped from the capillaries enters the lymphatic vessels, where it is then called lymph
Lymph
The name for interstitial fluid once it enters the lymphatic vessels
Lymphoid tissues
- houses and provides a proliferation site for lymphocytes
- furnishes an ideal surveillance vantage point for lymphocytes and macrophages
Lymph duct
- The largest channel in which lymph travels
- Right lymphatic duct: drains lymph from upper right limb, head, and thorax
- Thoracic duct: drains lymph from the rest of the body
Lymph trunk
- Formed by united collecting vessels
- Drain fairly large areas of the body
Lymphatic collecting vessels
- Similar to veins, but have thinner walls, more valves, and anastomose more
- Smallest channels through which lymph travels
Lymphatic capillary
- The blind ended capillaries in which transport of lymph begins
- Weave between tissue cells and capillaries
- Very permeable
Lacteal
- In the villi of intestinal mucosa
- Specialize in absorption of fats
Chyle
-Fatty lymph in digestive tract
Right lymphatic duct
-Drains lymph from the right upper limb, head, and thorax
Thoracic duct
-Drains lymph from the rest of the body
Cisterna chyli
-Large sac of the lymphatic duct that collects lymph from the two large lumbar trunks
Anastomose
-Join together
T-cells
-Manage the immune response, some attacking the disease directly
Lymphocyte
- T cells
- B cells
- Macrophages
