Chapter 19 Blood Vessels Flashcards
Artery
Carry blood away from the heart
Vein
Drain the tissues and return blood to the heart
Capillary
- Connect the arterioles and venules
- Directly serve the needs of the body’s cells
Elastic artery
-large arteries close to the heart that have large amounts of elastic tissue
Muscular artery
-smaller arteries that have less elastic tissue and more smooth muscle
Continuous capillary
least permeable and most common (skin, muscle)
Fenestrated capillary
large fenestrations increase permeability in areas of active absorption or filtration (kidney, small intestine)
Sinusoidal capillary
most permeable, only in special locations (liver, bone marrow, spleen)
Lumen
The middle of the blood vessels
Metarteriole
A vessel structurally intermediate between an arteriole and a capillary
Precapillary sphincters
- Surrounds the root of each true capillary at the metarteriole
- acts as a valve to regulate blood flow into the capillary
Blood flow
volume of flowing blood (ml/min)
Blood pressure
force/unit area (mmHg)
Resistance
amount of friction (peripheral resistance)
Blood viscosity
thickness of fluid
