Chapter 2- Police Administration Flashcards
Policing Today
Define community policing:
Philosophy that focuses on general neighborhood problems as a source of crime; community policing is preventative, proactive, and information based
Four steps of problem solving model called SARA:
Scanning
Analysis
Response
Assessment
CompStat
modern management practices, military like deployment efforts, and strong enforcement strategies -baed on the accurate statistical crime data
Hot spots (newer police strategies):
policing reflects the direct application of empirical data that show that crime is not randomly dispersed, but rather is concentrated in isolated areas.
Evidence based policing (newer police strategies):
A style of policing using the best available research to guide, manage, and evaluate police operations within a community
Policing intelligence led policing (newer police strategies):
Arising from the 9/11 terrorist attacks- is a relatively new policing style focused on offenders, not crime incidents, using intelligence analysis to prevent crime.
Predictive policing (newer police strategies):
A proactive policing style that uses information and analytical tools to prevent crime while using the fewest police resources possible
Tactical Crime Analysis or Crime Specific Analysis:
The crime analysis technique that involves a tabular display of reported crimes within a given pattern of time and/or location is:
Strategic Crime Analysis:
The crime analysis technique that involves the study of crime and/or social problems in a specific area
Link Analysis:
The crime analysis technique that involves a graphic portrayal of associations and relationships among people
Telephone Toll Analysis:
The crime analysis technique that involves computerized reports derived from court-ordered telephone long distance billing
Visual Investigative Analysis (VIA):
The crime analysis technique that involves charting that depicts key events of criminal activity in chronological order
Case Analysis and Management System (CAMS):
computerized case management in which large amounts of data are compiled and indexed for each retrieval of specific items. This system is used to clarify relationships and calculate the probability of associations.
Intelligence Analysis:
the identification of networks of offenders and criminal activity, often associated with organized crime , gangs, drug traffickers, prostitution rings, and terrorist organizations
Geographic information systems (GIS) and how would it enhance police service:
influential mechanism in hot spots policing as well as Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED), situational policing, directed patrols, and crime analysis. Can also track individual officer performance by area.
Two types: statistical spatial analysis and spatial modeling
