The application of selecting appropriate Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) codes for exams, testing services, and surgical procedures and linking them to associated International Classification of Diseases Clinical Modification (ICD-10-CM) diagnosis codes.
Current Procedural Terminology (CPT)
Codes referring to current procedural terminology published by the American Medical Association, which assigns a number to each procedure or test. It is updates regularly (current is CPT-5)
2 Rules:
1) Although the index may be used to locate a code, you must read the description completely in the main body of the manual before selecting a code
2) Do not select the approximate service code, you must select either the completely accurate code or enlist an unlisted code for services where there is no specific CPT descriptor
ICD-10-CM
Code of the International Classification of Diseases published by the American Medical Association, a system that assigns a number to each disease or diagnosis. It is updated regularly (current is ICD-10)
