Chapter 13: Low Vision Flashcards
Legal Blindness
A best corrected visual acuity of 20/200 or worse, or a visual field reduced to 20 degrees or less (in the best seeing eye)
Low Vision
A significant limitation in visual capacity resulting from disease, trauma, or a congenital condition that cannot be corrected to a normal range with refraction.
Visual acuity and peripheral vision need to be evaluated
Functional Vision
Visual acuity and peripheral vision, and visual processing sufficient for the person to carry out their normal activities
Visual Acuity
The measurement of the eye’s ability to see detail
Common Causes of Low Vision
1) Cataracts
2) Trauma
3) High refractive errors
4) Corneal scarring
5) Onchocerciasis (River Blindness)
6) Diabetic retinopathy
7) Congenital
8) Retinopathy of prematurity
9) Vitamin A deficiency
Low Vision Aids
1) Magnifiers and Reading Glasses
2) Increased lighting and Reducing Glare
Low Vision Devices
1) Eyeglasses
2) Handheld magnifiers
3) Telescopes
4) Enlarged printed materials
5) Projection devices
