Chapter 18: Landing Flashcards
What are land and hold short operations (LAHSO) and can we accept this clearance?
It’s when they tell you “cleared to land rwy 26, hold short of 22” assuming there’s a crossing runway of some sort on the airfield so you would have to safely bring your aircraft to a stop in that distance.
Cannot accept this clearance. Can passively participate by doing T&G while another aircraft is holding short of the runway.
What is the min altitude to turn after a takeoff? What is the exception?
400’ AGL
Exception is pulling closed for VFR patterns
How can you avoid potential tendency to duck under or fall prey to runway visual landing illusions?
Maintain composite cross-check with instrument glideslope indicator, VVI and altitude against visual cues
What is a common duck-under situation?
When pilot attempts to land within first 500-1000’ of runway after breaking out of an overcast condition. Can result in high sink rates, undershoots, hard landings.
Where can you find info about approach lighting systems?
FIH
What do you need to circle?
Must be at or above circling MDA and within circling radius constraints.
When requesting circling from an ASR, what should you tell the controller?
The category
What does the negative C mean in the circling line on the plate? What is Cat E circling radius?
There is expanded circling approach area where the circling minima are not standard.
Standard for Cat E is 4.5 NM.
What is a side-step maneuver?
Like a subset of circling but just a quick move over to a parallel runway.
To sidestep runways must be apart no more than 1200’ and must be published as a Sidestep, not a circle
