Chapter 13: Holding Flashcards
What is a standard holding pattern?
Racetrack with 2 180 deg turns and 2 straight legs and turns to the right. Non-standard left turns.
Can TACANs be used to hold over with station passage?
No, cannot hold over a TACAN itself or use a TACAN as a high altitude instrument approach fix (>180)
What are the 3 entry types? Where are they mandatory?
Parallel, direct or offset (teardrop NAS). Technique in NAS; procedure in ICAO
Make all turns in holding at what bank angles?
3 deg/sec or 25 deg bank angle whichever requires less (ICAO)
3 deg/sec, 30 deg bank angle or 25 deg bank angle when using flight director (FD) system
What should you do if holding airspeed will exceed max holding airspeed?
Advise ATC. Should be at or below max airspeed if depicted on chart holding pattern (unless request otherwise).
What max airspeed is permitted for climb-in holding?
310 knots
What are max holding airspeeds?
0-6000' MSL: 200 kts 6000' MSL-14,000' MSL: 230 kts Above 14,000' MSL: 265 kts Navy base: 265 kts AF base: 310 kts
What is timing based on in NAS? ICAO?
Inbound leg NAS.
Outbound leg ICAO.
What is holding timing?
1 min at or below 14,000’ MSL
1.5 min above 14,000’MSL
When does outbound timing begin?
Over or abeam fix or when on outbound heading, turn complete if cannot determine over or abeam
How do you execute drift corrections for holding?
Triple the drift on outbound leg of inbound drift correction needed
