Chapter 17 - Reading Hazardous Energy Flashcards
Cold Zone
The area surrounding a warm zone that is used for an incident command post, support agency interfacing, and staging of personnel and equipment
Ground Gradient
Electrical energy that has established a path to ground through the earth and that is now energizing the ground
Hazardous Energy
The unintended and often sudden release of stored, residual, or potential energy that will cause harm if contacted
Hot Zone
The area immediately surrounding a hazardous area that can be considered IDLH requiring appropriate PPE
No-Entry Zone
The area in which no responders are allowed to enter, regardless of PPE, due to dangerous conditions
Warm Zone
The area surrounding the hot zone where personnel, equipment, and apparatus are operating in support of an operation
ISO Concept
ISO needs to identify the presence of potential hazardous energy sources and make a judgment regarding their status (stable or unstable)
Electricity Concept
Always seeking the path of least resistance to a ground
Electricity Concept
Primary method for shock threats is to turn power off. When that isn’t possible hazards can be reduced by keeping a 10 foot clearance from wires or any conductive material that may be in contact with the wire
Substation/Transformer Fire Concept
Substation transformer fires and incidents involving large wind farm turbines should not be engaged without technical assistance from the local electrical company
Alternative Energy Concept
Alternative energy systems can include uninterrupted power supply sources such as battery rooms and auxiliary generators that may provide power even though the grid power has been shut off by the fire department
Mechanical Hazardous Energy
Includes tensioned wires, cables, springs, conveyers, and high-rack storage
Pressurized Systems
Typically include a reservoir for the medium, some sort of pump, tubing or a conveyance system, and the tool or implement that uses the pressure to achieve a task. Heat applied to a pressurized system can exceed the system’s design limits and cause an explosion
Vehicle Hazardous Energy
Contain forms of energy including fuel systems, heat generation, restraint systems (air bags), batteries, springs and pumps.
Weather Concept
Effective ISO’s study weather and understand the particulars of local weather patterns. They keep track of daily forecasts, particularly wind
