Chapter 17: Inheritence Flashcards
What does the nucleus of every cell contain?
Chromosomes
What is a chromosome?
A thread like structure made of DNA, which carries genetic information in the form of genes.
What does DNA carry?
The information that has to be passed on from parent to offspring: the genetic code.
Where is DNA carried?
In the nucleus of the sperm and eggs cells.
What is inheritance?
The transmission of genetic information from generation to generation.
What is DNA made up of?
Many genes.
What does each gene carry?
The information for making a particular protein.
What is a gene?
Is a length of DNA that codes for proteins.
What does each DNA molecule contain?
tens of thousands of smaller molecules called bases.
What are the bases of DNA?
A- Adenine
T- Thymine
C- Cytosine
G- Guanine
What determines the proteins that will be made in a cell?
The sequence of bases and their arrangement in the DNA.
What are proteins made up of?
Amino acids.
What does the sequence of amino acid determine?
The structure and the function of the protein.
What does the sequence of bases in DNA determine?
The sequence of amino acids in a protein, and so, the structure and the function of that protein.
What are the functions of proteins?
- Enzymes
- Antibodies
- Receptors for neurotransmitters
