Chapter 15 Section 2 Flashcards
how does a person become intoxicated?
drinking alcohol faster than body can break down the harmelss compounds
intoxication
state in which a person’s mental and physical abilities are impaired by alcohol or another substance
what accompanies intoxication by alcohol?
drinker’s body and behavior
intoxication impacting cardiovascular system
heart rate and blood pressure increase; more blood flows to the skin’s surface; core body temp decreases
intoxcation impacting excretory
kidneys increase urine production and drinkers lose more water from body than usual
intoxication impacting nervous system
brain activity slows down
coordination becomes impaired
sensations and perception become less clear
reflexes become sluggish
intoxication impacting digestive system
too much alcohol = vomiting
blackout
- drinks a lot
- period of time that the drinker cannot recall
blood alcohol concentration (BAC)
amount of alcohol in a person’s blood, (%); 0.1% means that 1/10 of 1% of fluid in blood is alcohol
what affect BAC?
rate of alcohol consumption, gender and size of drinker, how much food is in the stomach
rate of consumption
- liver chemically breaks down/METABOLIZES alcohol at fairly constant rate
- rate is 1/2 -1 once of alcohol per hour
who have the higher BAC?
females because males have a larger portion of the alcohol metabolizing in stomach before entering bloodstream
who has a more efficient liver metabolizing alcohol?
males
amount of food impact on alcohol
drinking on empty stomach increases rate of alcohol absorption into blood (HIGH BAC)
hangover
describes the aftereffects of drinking too much alcohol
SYMPTOMS: nausea, upset stomach, headache, sensitivity to noise
