- beliefs, values, ways of being
ex) wedding ring means love, wedding ceremony
social psychology
social rules/roles and how humans interact with each other in social settings
- more specific than cultural psychology
- how people are influences by the presence of others, group dynamics
culture clarifications
- no two people share the same culture
- socials groups are not uniform
- within group similarities (stop sign means stop) - Global cultural landscape consists of between-group differences and similarities
- all people around the worlds have tattoos and piercings - Culture is always changing
- dogs are more so pets now a days when they were working dogs
Collectivism
emphasize family and work group goals above individual needs or desires
- doing what’s best for society
- families and communities have a central role
- working as a group
ex) old people in china live with their adult children and NOT a care home
Individualism
emphasize personal achievement at the expense of group goals, resulting in a strong sense of competition
- uniqueness
- autonomy
- independence
ex) send our parents to a retiring home when they get old

observing a culture and doing interviews
Cross-cultural study
explores general similarities and differences between social groups
- collectivism vs individualism
