Essential Nutrients
Present in food, needed for normal functioning. (Not made in the body)
Nonessential nutrients
Food based either the body can make or are not needed for normal functioning.
When recommending the nutritional supplement, on what should your suggestion based? Why? How would you determine this recommendation?
- Is the clients diet deficient in the essential nutrients?
- Which physiological system do I hope to target? Does my client need to target that system?
- Is there appropriate research demonstrating that the supplement will work and not cause harm?

Yes, study shows 50% of hospitalized patients show signs of malnutrition.
Low quality processed food
What are some of the main reasons that clients can experience a low intake of essential nutrients?
Food aversions, client travel, hectic schedule, no planning, low calorie diet
List some of the risks versus rewards with dietary supplements.
Be sure it is not on banned list.
