Chapter 14-Geriatrics Flashcards
Effects of age on skin
reduced nutrition; hydration; elasticity; flexibility; circulation; ability of nerve endings to detect heat and cold, touch, and pressure; proprioceptive sensation; bruise easily; thinning layers; dryness
cataracts
protein over eye; becomes opaque; clouded over; simple surgery to replace lens
detached retina
retina begins to peel away from wall and you will lose peripheral vision; begins at edge and moves to center
glaucoma
pressure builds up in eye, then problems with attachment of optic nerve; can put a shunt to drain fluid so pressure doesn’t increase; damage to retina; no cure just slow progression
macular degeneration
with the degeneration the proteins don’t work; in normal eye proteins help eat cones to keep them short; can do injections to prevent more problems; lose central vision, but retain peripheral vision
acoustic neuroma
non cancerous tumor on CNVIII
Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo
BPPV; vertigo; dizziness; epley maneuvers to fix; Veda (vestibular disorder association); non life threatening; proximal comes and goes; positional-certain head position; something gets stuck in semicircular canal
labyrinthitis and vestibular neuritis
inner ear inflammation; long lasting
Meniere’s disease
like BPPV; sudden onset; can’t drive, etc.
otosclerosis
middle ear; thickening of bones
amputation
most amputations are vascular; impairment on top of other co-morbidities; major fall issue
arthritis
osteo and rheumatoid
diabetes mellitus
neuropathy (numbness); loss of proprioception; comes on slowly and hard to tell the change
malnutrition
meds may take “taste” away; dentures fit badly
Parkinson’s disease
short steps; arms hang; quite; muscle rigidity; pill-rolling tremors; “pretend your on stage”-BIG; LSVT - loud/big for PT; decrease in dopamine; get small within themselves
