Chapter 13- ICU Flashcards
Patient risk factors in ICU
acquired weakness; results in disuse atrophy of muscles with decreased muscle mass and reduce protein synthesis and insulin resistance
strength deficits
decreased activity tolerance
risk for orthostatic hypotension
goals for therapeutic intervention
positioning - prevent pressure ulcers ROM-Stretching wound care-PTA helps progress mobility improve activity tolerance strengthening
Population treated in ICU
Burns; CVA; end stage renal failure; MI; near drowning; surgery (cardiac, orthopedic, major internal); trauma (treat essential first); traumatic brain injury
general precautions for treating patients in ICU part 1
team work; speak to nurse; read chart carefully; observe equipment; introduce yourself; treat patient as any other; check vital signs; wash hands before and after
general precautions for treating patients in ICU part 2
follow Standard Precautions for all patients; close curtains; move any equipment to prepare; ask nurse for longer O2 tube; brakes locked on bed; gait belt; walking socks or shoes; move tubes so you don’t pull on them
general precautions for treating patients in ICU part 3
catheter below pelvis; no kinks in tubes; ask nurse to detach gastric feeding tube; check IV to make sure its secure; check ECG/EKG electrodes; leave patient and room as found (comfortable, equipment, bed rails, positioning, document fluids, inform family); document everything;
