Hepatitis
Refers to an inflammation (and often infection) of the liver
Influenza
Commonly known as flu, primarily an animal respiratory disease that has mutated to infect humans
Index of suspicion
Your awareness and concern for potentially serious underlying and unseen injuries or illnesses
Epidemic
Occurs when new cases of a disease in a human population substantially exceed the number expected based on recent experience
Pandemic
An disease outbreak that occurs on a global scale
Infectious disease
Medical condition caused by the growth and spread of small harmful organisms within the body
Communicable disease
A disease that can be spread from one person or species to another
Herpes simplex
A common virus that is asymptomatic in 80% of people carrying it, but characterized by small blisters on the lips or genitals in symptomatic infections
HIV
Human immunodeficiency virus
Virulence
The strength or ability of a pathogen to produce disease
Meningitis
Inflammation of the meninges coverings of the brain and spinal cord
Tuberculosis
A chronic mycobacterial disease that usually strikes the lungs.
Involves brain and kidneys
Whooping cough
Also called pertussis, is an airborne disease caused by bacteria that mostly affects children younger than 6. Signs and symptoms include fever and a “whoop” sound that occurs when patient tries to inhale after a coughing attack
Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA)
A bacterium that causes infections and resistant to many antibiotics.
Meningococcal meningitis
An inflammation of the meninges coverings of the brain and spinal cord; can be highly contagious
