Biased language
Use of changing (rise and fall) vocal pitch to convey grammatical information or personal attitude like surprise, anger, and wariness
Intonation
Process by which a person states what he or she believes the other person is saying
Reflection
An organization in which there are no barriers to information flow
Implies information available as needed moving quickly and easily enough so that the
organization functions far better as a whole than as separate parts
Boundaryless Organizations
What are Advantages of Written Communication?
• Provide a tangible and verifiable record
• Record can be stored for an indefinite period
of time
• Physically available for later reference
• More likely to be well thought-out, logical, and clear
What are Disadvantages of Written Communication?
- Time consuming
- Lack of feedback
- May not be read
Information that flows from higher to lower levels in the organization’s hierarchy
EX: Assign goals, provide instructions/feedback
Downward Communication
Information that flows from lower to higher levels in the organization’s hierarchy
EX: Inform boss of progress, relay current problem
Upward Communication
Information shared among people on the same hierarchical level
EX: Facilitate Coordination
Horizontal Communication
The amount of information that a communication medium can carry and the extent to which the medium enables the sender or receiver to reach a common understanding.
Information Richness
