What are the barriers to participation?
Lack of facilities or sporting infrastructure
Lack of personal resources in terms of time or money
Discrimination as a result of prejudice
The fear that you will suffer discrimination
Self/group imposed limits on participation based upon a sport having a low status within a social group
Pressure to undertake certain activities based upon stereotypical views
Define discrimination
Treating people differently through prejudice
Unfair treatment of a person or group based upon a stereotypical view of that person or group
Define stereotype
An oversimplified view of someone, a standardised image. Includes attributes that are incorrect or only partially true
Define ethnic group
A group of people who share a common and identifiable religious, racial, national or linguistic background
Define socio-economic group
A classification that groups together with people with similar social and economic backgrounds
Define sexism
Discrimination based upon ones sex or gender
Define ‘disability’
Any restriction or lack of ability to perform an activity in the manner or within the range considered normal for a human being
Define impairment
Any loss of abnormality of psychological, physiological or anatomical structure or function
Define the ‘Profile System’
A method of grouping people with different disability types or with degrees of the same impairment, together so they that may compete against eachother
Suggest solutions that NGBs could use to overcome discrimination, and to increase participation in physical activity.
