CHapter 13 Flashcards
Descending Tracts of the Spinal Cord
Corticospinal
Extrapyramidal
corticalspinal
Arise in the cortex primarily in the primary motor cortex. Also come from the premotor cortex, primary somatosensory cortex and travel to the spinal cord. Decussate at the caudal end of the medulla and form the lateral corticospinal tract.
corticalspinal tracts (#/names)
There are two corticospianl tracts lateral and anterior
Extrapyramidal tracts defintion
In anatomy, the extrapyramidal system is a biological neural network that is part of the motor system causing involuntary movements. The system is called “extrapyramidal” to distinguish it from the tracts of the motor cortex that reach their targets by traveling through the “pyramids” of the medulla.
Extrapyramidal tracts function
Smoothly coordinated motor function
Upright balance
Extrapyramidal names
Tectospinal
Rubrospinal
vestibulospinal
Clinical correlates of the Spinal cord
Altered reflexes (hyperreflexia, hyporeflexia. And clonus reflex)
Lower Motor Neuron Syndrome
Complete Spinal resection
Syringomyelia
Syringomyelia
a generic term referring to a disorder in which a cyst or cavity forms within the spinal cord. This cyst, called a syrinx, can expand and elongate over time, destroying the spinal cord. The damage may result in pain, paralysis, weakness,[3] and stiffness in the back, shoulders, and extremities. Syringomyelia may also cause a loss of the ability to feel extremes of hot or cold, especially in the hands.
