Action research
A method of investigating a problem in a school or classroom that involves the scientific process of identifying, analyzing, planning, implementing, and evaluating problems, concerns, or educational questions; teachers serve as the primary investigators to improve their own teaching practices
Campus Improvement Plan
Stratagem for involving teachers in individual campus-level planning, evaluation, and decision-making processes at their own school; most often the purpose is to improve the achievement of children at their schools
Collaboration
A group process that emphasizes a common vision and shared responsibility for planning and implementing goals
Continuing Professional Education (CPE)
State requirements for certificate renewal specifying time and participation in approved learning experiences that improve and update an educator’s knowledge and skills
Domains
Specific areas of related information; “umbrella topics”
Family liaisons
School representatives who serve as contacts and promote positive links between school personnel and the parents, grandparents, and relatives
Horizontal teaming
Joint planning and decision making by those who work at the same level
Mentee
A teacher, usually novice, who receives guidance and individualized assistance
Mentor
An experienced teacher or administrator who provides guidance and individualized assistance
Nonverbal communication
Conversing with another individual without spoken words
Novice

Voluntary associations of teachers who communicate using digital tools such as message boards, blogs, and wikis

Giving serious thought or consideration to issues, activities, or events related to teaching and learning
Reflective practitioners
Teachers who contemplate, look at again, or study their past teaching moment to enhance professional growth and student achievement
Reflective teaching
The natural outcome of teachers’ re-examination and reevaluation of their teaching
Reflective thinking
The process of probing, inspecting, and studying to improve one’s teaching practice
School community
All those individuals and organizations that assist one another in providing learning opportunity for students at a school
Self-assessment
Teachers’ rating, judging, or critiquing their own performance, abilities, and effectiveness
Self-efficacy
One’s expectations of his or her effectiveness; the extent to which a teacher believes that she or he can influence how well students learn
Site-based decision making (SBDM)
A procedure whereby teachers participate in the management, decision-making, and governing of certain aspects of their own school
Specialists
Individuals within the school community you have specific knowledge, understanding, and expertise in a particular area of information (e.g. psychologist, diagnosticians; content area specialist)
Summative evaluation
A final comprehensive evaluation of a teacher’s performance at the end of the period of time that includes formal observation, walk-through’s, self-appraisal, etc.
Support systems
Individuals and organizations who are a source of strength, guidance, and encouragement for teachers and students
Teacher appraisal systems
A procedure for the evaluation, assessment, and critiquing of teachers’ abilities to provide meaningful learning outcomes for their students
Teacher Self-Report Form
A requirement of the PDAS that encourage teachers to look within themselves, closely examine their personal convictions, and work towards improvement goals; a personal, introspective, and informal evaluation or self-assessment
Team teaching
Instruction provided by two or more teachers who share responsibility for planning and implementing experiences for the same class or group of students
Verbal communication
Use of spoken words to transmit information to other individuals
Vertical teaming
Joint planning and decision-making across grade levels by teachers and other district employees
